What is the schedule for September?

We are implementing a Slow Start for our kindergarten students:
  • September 3-5 = Half Days (no assigned classes until September 8)
  • September 8-10 = Half Days (WA Kids family meetings will be scheduled in the afternoons Sept. 8-11)
  • September 11 = Full Day with Early Release
  • September 12 (and beyond) = Full Day

What is "Slow Start" for kindergarten?

Slow Start is a gradual entry plan during the first weeks of school. It helps your child adjust to school in small groupslearning routines, building confidence, and forming positive relationships.

Why is Brownsville using a Slow Start model?

  • To get to know your child individually
  • To teach classroom routines in a calm setting
  • To support students emotionally and socially, and set a strong, positive foundation for the year.

When will I know my child's teacher?

To ensure the best possible class placements, all kindergarten teachers will work with all students during the Slow Start week. This allows us to get to know your child and create balanced classrooms that support the needs
of all learners.

What will my child be learning during Slow Start?

  • School Smarts: Listening to the teacher, sitting on the carpet, walking in line, following directions
  • Social Smarts: Sharing, making friends, managing big emotions, playing safely
  • Student Supports: Our team will learn how to best support your child's unique needs

Is transportation available during Slow Start?

Yes! Bus transportation will be available during all half-day sessions.

Is childcare available after the half-day sessions?

Yes! Champions is offering half-day kindergarten care on those dates. Learn more.

How can I help my child prepare?

  • Talk about what school will be like
  • Practice morning routines
  • Encourage curiosity and confidence
  • Let your child know it's okay to feel both excited and nervous!
