2019 READING OLYMPICS

Brownsville ELEMENTARY SCHOOL

February is Reading Olympics month at Brownsville Elementary.  The purpose of Reading Olympics is to encourage children to choose reading as a leisure activity.  Students may work toward a Bronze, Silver, or Gold medal by reading or being read to for the required amount of time:

          BRONZE                                    SILVER                                 GOLD

480 to 839 minutes                   840-1199 minutes               1200 minutes or more

120 minutes per week.           210 minutes per week.              300 minutes per week

For 3rd, 4th, and 5th Grade:

Reading Olympic minutes will be tied to AR goals this year.  Your student will not be receiving a metal if the below AR requirements are not met.  Please check with your student’s homeroom teacher for the status of their AR points.  If you have met the following requirements you will receive a metal:

  • Gold Medal – You have met or exceeded your AR goal
  • Silver Medal – You are within 70-80% of your AR goal
  • Bronze Medal – You are within 50-70% of your AR goal

Students may earn minutes by:

  • Reading to themselves.
  • Reading aloud to others.
  • Listening to a story read aloud by another family member.

You can help your child by setting aside a time each evening for reading.  We would encourage you to read a book yourself or have your child read aloud to you or the whole family.  This will encourage your child’s participation.  If you or another family member reads aloud to more than one child at a time, each child may record those minutes.

You will find a calendar attached to this information sheet that can be used to keep track of time spent reading.  Brownsville will be collecting all minutes read through a google form online only (https://goo.gl/forms/Rmea4jI0ALzOKSXl2) the form will be available January 28th)  Parents will need to access the form every week to enter in the minutes read by their student. The google form will available through February 26th  for entries. There will be no exceptions. Please report all time in minutes.

Thank you for your part in helping your child become a successful reader.  If you have any questions, please contact Kim San Fellipo at 662-8000.
